the easiest way to do glossy lids

how-to-glossy-lids

Glossy lids have been a trend for a little while, with new eye gloss products popping up promising to give you the slickest lids without any mess. But as I surveyed my extensive collection of eyeshadows and eyeshadow palettes, I couldn’t yet bite the bullet on one. Instead I found what has to be the easiest hack to get the glossy look: lip balm. Take a tiny bit on the tip of your finger and dab it (don’t swipe) over any regular eyeshadow. I particularly love this look with a bronze or peach shadow (this LORAC palette is a forever favorite) but the beauty of it is that you can use any powder eyeshadow you have, or even use it on its own. The rosebud salve gives super wet-look glossiness but doesn’t feel sticky or uncomfortable. It creases the tiniest bit – there’s no getting around that with this look – and will wear off slightly throughout the day, nothing that can’t be fixed with another dab of balm.

7 red lipsticks I love

best-red-lipsticks

After over one year of never not having red nail polish, I’m giving my nails a break and a chance to recover from at least 24 gel manicures (more on that in another post). I’m so used to that pop of red that I’ve found myself reaching instead for red lipstick most days. These are my favorites from a very extensive collection. Tony from Tom Ford’s Lips & Boys collection is the darkest of the bunch but still a very true, cool-toned red. Wander Beauty’s Parisian Red is the easiest way to wear a red lip — it’s a more sheer, buildable color and the most comfortable formula. The YSL 1 Le Rouge is a classic red with a satin finish, my preference. The mini Marc Jacobs was a Sephora VIB exclusive at one point but the formula is the same as this one. My drugstore pick is L’Oreal’s Blake’s Red, another classic shade. The only liquid lipstick I’ve tried and loved is this Stila Stay All Day! The mini above in shade Beso is available as a 100 point reward at Sephora right now. And lastly, a beautiful orangey red is Charlotte Tilbury’s Tell Laura from the Hot Lips collection. Clearly I can’t have enough red lipsticks so if I’m missing your favorite, let me know below!

my 11 wardrobe basics

11-wardrobe-essentials

The past few months, I’ve been all about editing my wardrobe: noting what I reach for most, getting rid of what I don’t, taking stock of what I have & filling in any gaps. These eleven pieces are what I consider my wardrobe basics – the items I wear most often that I’ve either invested in one or two really good versions (the trench coat) or can’t buy enough of (striped tees). What are your wardrobe staples?

1. Stripe Tee & 2. Little Black Dress

I have no less than 14 stripe tops at last count and yet I wear every single one. This J.Crew ballet t-shirt is one of my all-time favorites with it’s skinny black and white stripes and fitted silhouette. Another staple I’d rather not count is little black dresses. They’re all different (I promise!) like this knit LBD, my newest addition from Club Monaco with a cute cutout back. In the summer I wear this one just as often.

3. Trench Coat

This was my big investment purchase last year – the most classic Burberry trench coat that I’ll have in my wardrobe for years on end. I chose the lighter color because I’m most often wearing all black. I couldn’t love it more and I wear it every chance I get!

4. White Tee & 5. Silk Blouse

I’ve cycled through a few favorite white tees but none has held up as well as Everlane’s Pima Stretch Tee. I love the slightly longer sleeve and incredibly soft fabric. It’s one I’ll buy again and again (in black and gray, too). Equipment’s Signature Silk Shirt is another staple to get in multiple colors. This paired with skinny pants and pointed shoes is the ultimate fail-proof outfit, in my opinion.

6. Leather Leggings & 7. Pleated Skirt

A step above denim and just as versatile, my perfect leather leggings are from Helmut Lang. They update this pair slightly every season but I’ve found they always have just the right amount of stretch and super skinny ankle. One step above those? A timeless black pleated skirt. This season I’ve liked pairing it with these velvet ankle boots or suede over-the-knee boots.

8. Skinny Jeans

How great is it when  you find your perfect pair of jeans? Frame makes mine – the Le High Skinny. They’re stretchy but they don’t stretch out, don’t fade a ton and just fit me perfectly. This dark wash pair is my favorite.

9. Comfortable Flats & 10. Black Pumps

I wanted to put Loeffler Randall’s Quinnie flats here but it looks like they’ve stopped making them?! Runners up include the Aquazzura Christy flats, Nicholas Kirkwood Beya loafers and J.Crew pointed flats – always pointed. Also my incredible under-$100 black Saks Fifth Avenue Leather Pumps. I’ve worn them about twice a week for over a year and haven’t had to get even the heel tip replaced yet!

11. Watch

If I’m going to include any accessory, it’s this Larsson & Jennings black and gold watch. Super pretty, goes with everything, what more can you ask?
